Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) can be easily checked when the puppies are 6-8 weeks old, by a Board Certified Ophthalmologist. The eyes must be dilated prior to the examination, so the interior of the eye can be examined with an ophthalmoscope. If the puppy’s eyes are not normal, the actual abnormality is noted. A grading system is no longer used.
Posted July 20, 2015. A white face is just another variation of coat color. It doesn't indicate a merle x merle breeding. White headed dogs, or extreme white factored dogs, can produce pups with a greater incidence of deafness. This has to do with lack of pigmentation in the hairs of the inner ear.
A ‘double merle’ is a merle that has two copies of the merle gene, this is to be avoided at all costs as there are numerous health issues associated with this genetic combination, mainly deafness, poor eyesight and general poor health and development. A double merle will often appear excessively white coloured and may have abnormally small

A blue merle Border Collie’s health/genetic problems Not only is the merle pattern gene complicated, but it’s also associated with potential health concerns. All dogs that are bred and cared for properly are generally healthy, but they can still be susceptible to genetic health problems.
The problems with double merles. Mating two merle dogs with each other ensures merle pups, but each of those pups will have a one in four chance of inheriting double merle colouration. A double merle dog has a greatly elevated chance of inheriting not only their distinctive coat colour, but also a range of health problems too – such as
Collie Colors: The two base color genes in collies are brown (sable) and black (tri color). Most of us know that in our breed brown is dominant and black recessive. A puppy inherits one color gene from each parent. Therefore, if a collie inherits a dominant brown gene from each parent, he/she is a “pure for sable” (homozygous for brown).
